Top loaders remain popular in Harare because they are tough, quick and handle large family loads well. They come in two main types: agitator machines with a central post, and pulsator or impeller machines with a low disc at the bottom of the tub. Each has its own common faults.
We repair both types at your home. Whether your top loader hums but does not agitate, will not spin, or fills and then stops, we find the cause and get it running again.

- It washes but will not spin, or spins very slowly
- A humming noise with no movement

Common top loader faults in Harare
The lid switch is the most frequent failure on top loaders. It is a cheap part but, when it fails, the machine will not spin because it thinks the lid is open. Worn drive belts and clutches are next, especially on machines that are regularly overloaded with blankets and heavy towels.
On pulsator machines, the mode shifter or gearbox wears out over time, so the machine can wash but not spin, or spin but not wash. Older agitator machines often need the agitator dogs or the coupling replaced. These are all repairable, and parts for the main brands are generally available in Harare.
Top loader or front loader?
We repair both, so there is no pressure from us either way. Top loaders are easier to load and generally cheaper to repair. Front loaders use less water and are gentler on clothes. If you are weighing up a repair against a replacement, read our guide to choosing between them.

Top Loader Repairs: frequently asked questions
Why does my top loader fill but not spin?
The most common causes are a faulty lid switch, a worn drive belt, a failed clutch or a blocked drain. The machine will not spin while water is still in the tub, so a slow drain can also stop the spin.
Can you repair old top loaders?
Yes, in most cases. Older top loaders are often simpler and very repairable. If a part is no longer available, we will tell you before any work begins.
